About the Book

The Story

Father Bear seated beneath a great pine, holding his five cubs, with a log cottage behind them
Father Bear and his five cubs beneath the old forest

Deep within an ancient forest, beneath the whispering pines and silver birches, a father raises five extraordinary cubs.

Each is different. Each sees the world through their own eyes. And each has much to learn.

Through changing seasons, unexpected encounters, and the quiet wisdom of everyday life, Father Bear shares the lessons he has gathered over a lifetime.

Inspired by the timeless atmosphere of Slavic folklore, Tales of Father Bear and His Five Cubs is a collection of stories about the things that matter most: courage, kindness, family, and the enduring love between a father and his children.

Five Children, Five Cubs

The five cubs were shaped by the author’s own five children — Caitlyn, Izzy, Noah, Maddie, and Abby — whose individual personalities gave each character a heart of its own.

A Note on Folklore

These are original stories written by Brent Whetstone. They draw on the atmosphere, imagery, and storytelling traditions of Russian and Slavic folklore, but they are not retellings of historical folktales.
